Wisdom Teeth?

I just left the dentist. All my teeth are perfectly fine. I have my two upper wisdom teeth. They have caused me no problems and do not have any cavities. My dentist suggest they be removed. Is this really necessary?

No, my dentist has been telling me for years I should have them removed. I have the bottom two fully in and the top two are coming in now. Unless they get absessed or something is a problem they shouldn%26#039;t come out. I won%26#039;t let anyone have my teeth.. they will fall out before someone pulls them out.

Reply:Yes, becasue they will come in eventually. The older you get the the harder it is for your body to heal from the surgery, so get it done ASAP.
Reply:The problem with %26#039;wisdom teeth%26#039; is that they are %26#039;weaker%26#039; than your %26#039;normal teeth%26#039; and they can get cavities that can %26#039;spread%26#039; to your normal teeth ... and since you have ONLY your two %26#039;upper%26#039; wisdom teeth and no %26#039;lower ones%26#039; to %26#039;grind them against%26#039; you don%26#039;t %26#039;need them%26#039; so I think that it could be %26#039;best%26#039; if you had them removed ... but if you do decide to %26#039;keep them%26#039; then you should be sure to %26#039;brush them extra well%26#039; and floss next to them carefully every night to keep %26#039;cavities%26#039; from forming in them. If your dentist says it%26#039;s %26#039;up to you%26#039; then you do have the choice ...
Reply:Not unless you have pain or infection in the surrounding tissue. It sounds like he just wants more of your money. Dentists perform unnecessary procedures all the time. Scoundrels!





I had two wisdom teeth removed on the left side of my mouth and still have the other two. If anything, the two teeth should be removed on the same side rather than what your dentist is recommending to keep an even bite.

Reply:It is highly likely you will eventually have to have them removed. If I had it to do over again, I would do it before mine became impacted (cutting through the gum and pushing against my existing teeth) to have them extracted. Then on the other hand, some people never have a problem. Ask to see the x-rays and request an explanation as to why he or she feels the extractions are necessary.
Reply:I have one wisdom tooth and everytime I go in my dentist just makes sure it isn%26#039;t bothering me and sends me on my way.





But basically there is no reason to have them pulled unless there is a problem.





Oh and most likely if one starts to cause a problem they will go ahead and pull both that way they don%26#039;t have to go in at a later date and pull the other when it starts to cause a problem.
Reply:Well, my childhood dentist told my mom the same thing when 3 of them came in at age 17. So, they were not pulled and eventually, they shifted my teeth and my bite is off alittle now. So, I had them pulled at 21 and just had the 4th one extracted by an Oral Surgeon 6 days ago. I am now 26. So, I would suggest this. If you had braces in the past or just were born with gorgeous teeth, I would pull them. It would really suck if your teeth shifted due to them making your teeth move. If your teeth are just like everyone elses out there..... ordinary and you can keep them clean and without cavities, then keep them. It is totally your decision. Eventually, you will probably have to get them removed cause 90% of people out there can%26#039;t reach very well and clean them and they eventually rot. If you think on those terms, it is easier to take them out when you are young verses older. Choose well......
Reply:I say YES.Only b/c Ive have mine taken out...they didnt bother me for years until 2 of them cut through.?did he tell you if you had 2 lower wisdom teeth when he did an Xray?They can grow sideways or just push your other teeth,over time making them crowded,not pretty on some folks..lol I actually asked for 1 to keep,if he could pull it out without breaking it...i cleaned and polished it and wear it on my %26quot;chain of wisdom%26quot;..
Reply:OK, now the informed answer: Wisdom teeth, (correctly called 3rd molars) are basically excess tissue. We don%26#039;t actually eat on them as they lay behind the area where we generate most of our biting force. They are poorly rooted and therefore are, in general, the easiest teeth in the mouth to extract. Because they are hard to clean around, they tend to eventually get tooth decay in them. AND, because they are hard to clean around, they also get lots of periodontal disease around them, (gum disease). This, unfortunately, destroys the bone around them which, just happens, to be the bone that also holds the 2nd molars in place. So, lots of people hang on to their 3rds so long that, in the end, they end up losing their worthless 3rds AND their good 2nd molars. Finally, because of tooth decay and gum disease, you will probably lose them anyway.....so why not have them out while you are young and healthy. If you wait until you develope heart problems, severe diabetes, etc.......a simple tooth extraction could become life threatening.
Reply:Many people keep their wisdom teeth, assuming they%26#039;re not experiencing any problems. I%26#039;d suggest getting a second opinion from another dentist, have him/her take x-rays, and let you know if he sees a need for them to come out. I mean hey, why go through that pain/discomfort if there isn%26#039;t a foreseeable problem, right?
Reply:YES YOU SHOULD JUST GET THEM REMOVED, BECAUSE ONCE THEY DO START GROWING YOU WISH YOU HAD LISTENED TO YOUR DENTIST, TAKE IT FROM SOMEONE THATS BEEN THERE, MY DENTIST TOLD ME THE SAME THING, BUT I WAS SCARED OF GOING TO THE DENIST, BUT ONCE THEY STARTED GROWING IN I WENT CRYING TO MY MOM AND THERE WAS NOTHING SHE COULD DO FOR ME, BUT MUCH ME APP. TO GO BACK TO THE DENTIST THEN I HAD TO WAIT TILL THEY COULD GET ME IN, SO ALL THEY CAN DO WAS GIVE ME PAIN MED.%26#039;S BUT THAT DID NOT EVEN HELP SO GO GET THAT DONE BEFORE THEY DO START COMING THEY THE WAY IN.
